Sydenham Church Marks Community Service's Day with Food Bank Anniversary

On 6th July 2024, Sydenham Seventh-day Adventist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Otis Lewis, celebrated their Community Service's Day under the theme, 'Working For The Master'.

Sister Joyan Johnson and her team recognised that as a community church, we need to show God's love by preaching and demonstrating our practical efforts and support to the people around us. Hence, 'The Helping Hands Food Bank' was launched on 31st May 2023.

One year on, many lives have been blessed. This was testified by several regular attendees of our Food Bank who were present on the day. In support of our programme, various uniformed community service leaders within the Area 6B circuit of churches joined in the celebration. Hewitt Grant, the Community Services President for Area 6B, was in attendance. Our guest speaker, Pastor Nerrine Barrett, the SEC Community Services Director, reminded us in St John 21:15-19, to extend Jesus' love by showing kindness to others.

Three local schools that regularly receive food bank supplies sent letters of appreciation expressing their gratitude for the incredible generosity and unwavering support the church has shown over the past year through the Helping Hands Food Bank.

The programme climaxed with one of the local police sergeant sharing and providing insight into the community work he and fellow officers were doing: their concerns for the safety of our young people, their commitment to providing education programmes in schools, and the need for the wider community to collaborate in support of this cause in making our communities safer.

We thank God for making the programme a success.
