SEC Pathfinder Fair: Luton Central's Excellence Recognised with Top Award

Luton Central a thriving Pathfinder Club, filled with motivated teens and younger Pathfinders, under inspiring leaders, received the ‘Best Performed Club’ trophy at this year’s SEC Pathfinder Fair on 9 June 2024.

Luton Central was part of 18 other clubs joining in for the third Pathfinder Fair since its revival in 2022. The Fair was re-introduced just after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022 as a means to get Pathfinders back into the open space so they can fellowship while showcasing the practical skills they learned in their curriculum classes.

Many think of a Fair and imagine bouncy castles, go karts, candy floss, and the like, but Pathfinder Fair does not fit intothat category. Pathfinders are not only required to do spiritual exercises and memory gems but they are also required to learn practical skills like knots, lashings, first aid, etc as well.

The Fair is designed with activities that allow Pathfinders to implement these skills. One example is when a team of six pathfinders are asked to create a square-shaped chariot, using various knots and lashings. This chariot needed to be strongto carry a small Pathfinder across the field. Another example was for teams to build and light two fires in a controlled environment and simulate a camp cooking scenario. Other examples in the past included orienteering, first aid, semaphore, and tent pitching. All of these activities are pitched in a competitive environment, demanding speed and accuracy from all teams.

Over the past three years, the average attendance ranged between 15 to 21 clubs from all corners of the SEC. Hosted at the beautiful Stanborough Park, under the canopy of sunny skies, over 600 pathfinders and supporters marched from Stanborough School, lined up in their teams, to get ready for their challenges and the next six hours included the skilled events, drilling and marching displays, a drill down, and fun relay and tug-of-war. The clubs also had to prepare crafts that reflected environmental friendliness and sustainability. These were displayed in their booths they had to prepare beforehand.

Each team member received a medal for the day, while certain teams were awarded trophies for various categories.

Finally, one team received the Conference Director’s Trophy. This trophy is given to a club that performed well overall, in terms of their timekeeping, sportsmanship, working together and motivating one another. Norwich Club was given this auspicious award.
