Cornwall Ministers Are Not Messing Around: A Tale of Community Spirit
In the quaint town of St Austell, nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Cornwall, a remarkable display of community spirit unfolded on Sunday, 12 May 2024, as ministers and church members of the St Austell Seventh-day Adventist Church banded together for a monumental task – the revitalization of their beloved church building and its surroundings.
With sleeves rolled up and hearts united in purpose, the ministers and members embarked on a journey of transformation, determined to give their church a much-needed facelift. Armed with paint brushes, digger, shovel, fork, hand trowel, rake, pruning saw, wood shredder, loppers, brooms, and an unwavering sense of camaraderie, they set out to tackle the challenge head-on.
What made this endeavour truly extraordinary was the decision to undertake the manual labour themselves. From scrubbing floors to painting walls, every task was carried out with dedication and enthusiasm. As paint splattered, vegetation cut, shredded, and laughter echoed through the halls, bonds were forged and memories created, strengthening the fabric of their tight-knit community. every task was carried out with dedication and enthusiasm.
One of the most inspiring sights was witnessing individuals like Terry and Pam, despite their advanced age, fearlessly scaling ladders and embracing the challenge with gusto. Their unwavering determination served as a testament to the indomitable spirit that permeates the St Austell Seventh-day Adventist Church community.
The impact of their efforts extended far beyond the confines of their church walls. Neighbours looked on in admiration as the ministers and members poured their hearts into the revitalization project. Touched by their dedication, and one of them donated flowers to adorn the church grounds.
As the day drew to a close and the last cut was made, although the work was far from over. I was inspired by the sense of purpose and unity that permeated the day, I couldn't help but reflect on the words of Peter in the Bible, who, upon witnessing a moment of divine revelation, exclaimed, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters - one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah,’’ Matthew 17:4
Indeed, it was more than just a church cleaning and painting day; it was a testament to the power of community, the strength of unity, and the transformative potential of collective action. As I looked around at my fellow minister - Pr Steven Hulbert and church members, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude and pride to be a part of such a vibrant and resilient community and to say, ‘’ If you wish, I put up four shelters - one for me, one for Pr Steven Hulbert, one for Terry Symons and one for Members.’’
So, to my fellow Pastor, Elders, Deacon and all the dedicated members of the St Austell Seventh-day Adventist Church, I say this: thank you for showing us what it means to roll up your sleeves and get the job done. Your commitment to serving others and your unwavering spirit of camaraderie are a true inspiration to us all.
As we move forward, may we continue to build on the foundation of community and compassion that you have so beautifully exemplified, knowing that together, there is no challenge too great and no obstacle too daunting to overcome.
