Christ Above All: Hackney’s Men’s Ministries Day

As iron sharpens iron so one man sharpens another (Proverbs 27:17)

The Hackney SDA Church Community were told that Christ is above all and that the sharpening of iron against iron is likened to one man sharpening another during a service in which the Men’s Ministries department took centre stage on Sabbath 17th June 2023 ahead of Father’s Day celebrated widely across the UK the following day on Sunday 18th June 2023.

Sabbath School Superintendent for the day, Elder Darell Philip shared some Minute Motivators for Men (2014) by Stan Toler which were intended to offer quick inspiration for the time of their life. “Don’t allow your mind to stick in neutral. Become a lifelong learner. Strive to know more tomorrow than you do today. Your mind is one of the few things you can expand without breaking it,” he read. This was appropriately followed by the adult lesson study: The Seal of God and the Mark of the Beast: Part 2 which was ably led by guest teacher, Clive Humphrey, a deacon at the Tottenham Lighthouse SDA Church.

A special item in song by Hackney’s Male Voice Group – If we ever needed the Lord before, we sure do need Him now, went down a treat with all who were able to listen live in person at the sanctuary as well as those watching online via Zoom.

In his closing remarks, Sabbath School Superintendent for the day, Elder Darell Philip, again reading from Stan Toler’s book, Minute Motivators for Men, encouraged them to be overcomers: “Stay in touch with the Chief Engineer. In racing the driver is in constant communication with someone who has a better view of the track – who knows the conditions of the car and the driver. You have a similar advantage. Your Heavenly Father sees everything. He knows the conditions and He knows you. Be an overcomer. Don’t settle for second when you can be in victory lane. Gentlemen, start your engines,” he read.

Invited guest speaker for the day, Elder Dominique Clem from the Balham SDA Church spoke on the theme – Turning Failure into Achievement. He said that every man needs to have a Barnabas (encourager) in their life and highlighted in a YouTube video clip called The Race featuring 600m USA runner Heather Dorniden, the importance of getting up after a fall and continuing the race to the finish https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cM5A1K6TxxM. Elder Clem, who is in the final year of Pastoral studies at Newbold College, then left the men with Five Steps for Well-Being during his afternoon presentation: “Connect with others; Be physically active; Learn a new skill; Give to others and Pay attention to the present moment,” he said.
