Tottenham Lighthouse: Let Praises Rise

Praise the Lord! How good to sing praises to God! How delightful and how fitting! (Psalm 147:1 NLT) It was Music Day at Tottenham Lighthouse Church on Sabbath, 1 July 2023, and we were transported to the heavenly courts by the melodious and sweet-sounding songs of praise and thanksgiving. It was indeed a delightful and fitting way to give praises to our God.

The sanctuary was full to capacity, with standing room only. We were later informed by Dr Audrey Soyam, Church Clerk that we had registered the highest attendance figure at Church for the year. YouTube showed that we had over 900 online viewers not only from the UK, but also from the US, Caribbean and Africa. We were blessed by having four Pastors ‘in the House’ - Pastors V Thorpe & C Thorpe, former pastors of Lighthouse Church; Pastor V Roach, former pastor of Tottenham West Green Road Church and Pastor Dr Jude Jeanville, the present pastor of the Tottenham Lighthouse Church. What unity and commitment to the mission was shown by their presence!

The theme for Music Day was ‘Let Praises Rise’. Praises did rise and a joyful noise was made unto the Lord. We were blessed with a musical feast which caused many to rise from their seats to express their praises to God with their whole being. As if this was not enough, we got the ‘cherry on the top’ from the message delivered by Pastor V Thorpe. He was accompanied by his son, Jude and his wife Sis Denneese Thorpe, a longstanding member of Tottenham Lighthouse’s daily 5am worship service.

The theme for Pastor V Thorpe’s sermon was, ‘O that men would praise the Lord’, based on Psalm 107:8. It was thought provoking and at times, humorous. He reminded us that we needed to acknowledge God’s mercies. We should praise God with thanksgiving and ‘thanks-living’; praising God with our lips and our lives. We are commanded not to steal, but when we keep silent about the goodness of God we become thieves; we rob God of His glory.

While praises were rising inside the Church, on the outside the mission continued. Derek, a visitor to our twice weekly Food Hub was given one of our spiritual leaflets some time ago by Deacon Joseph Awotwi. He came back with a wonderful testimony. After reading the leaflet he stopped reading the Quran that someone had given to him and wanted a Bible instead. We were happy to oblige. He was presented with a Bible on Music Day by our First Elder Roger Charles.

A special ‘Thank You’ to the musicians and artistes who shared their God-given talents with us: ELSOM Orchestra, E Corea and other band members, T Elliott-Waldron, T Adeniyi, Clapton Praise Team, R Graham-Benjamin, L Sampson, C Chike-Michael, A Johnson, United Voices, K Daniel, J Thorpe, K Hunter, TLI and the Tottenham Lighthouse Praise Team 2. Thanks also to the Almighty for inspiring and directing Sisters A Onyemenem, J Thorpe and D Green-Tyser to organise such spirit-filled programme.

Music Day will long be remembered for the spiritual high that was experienced by all. The music, the message, the oneness and the commitment to mission transported us mere mortals into the presence of a Holy and Immortal God. No wonder Paul wrote, ‘Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.’ (Ephesians 5:18-19 NLT)
