Hyland House School Celebrates 100 Year Anniversary

Hyland House School marked a historic milestone as it celebrated its 100th anniversary on July 8th and 9th, 2023. The momentous occasion brought together current and former students, administrators, staff, and families to honour a century of Adventist educational excellence and spiritual guidance that has shaped the lives of generations of young people.

The celebrations began on Sabbath at the City Gates Conference Centre in Ilford with a graduation ceremony. It recognised the hard work, dedication, and achievements of the students throughout the academic year, from Early Years Foundation Stage pupils to Year 6 graduates completing their journey at the school.

Headteacher Errol Gayle and former SEC Education Director Opal Johnson-Christie presented awards and certificates of achievement to students as parents and well-wishers cheered and applauded. During his Headteacher Remarks, Errol Gayle expressed immense pride in the students' accomplishments and extended gratitude to parents and staff. Additionally, he paid special tribute to Year 1 & 2 Teacher Jennifer Smith, who was retiring after 41 years at the school.

Pastor Anthony Fuller, the school Chaplain, delivered an inspiring address to the graduate class of 2023, commending them for their achievements and encouraging them to embrace their potential and the boundless possibilities that await them in their new schools. He emphasised the importance of courage and faith being their greatest allies as they step into "a new chapter" of their lives.

A notable moment during the ceremony was the Graduate's Response given by Year 6 pupils Gia-Marie and Alanna-Mai. They expressed gratitude for attending the "best school they could have ever hoped for" and thanked all those who played pivotal roles in shaping their academic, personal, and spiritual growth, especially parents, faculty, and staff. They also spoke optimistically about the bright futures and opportunities ahead. To the students that they were leaving behind, they stressed the importance of inspiring and uplifting others, as well as being warm and friendly to new arrivals, to ensure they feel welcome into the "Hyland House School family." The girls then challenged all in attendance to "reach for the stars, dream for tomorrow, live for today, and achieve the best."

Throughout the ceremony, students, staff, and alumni shared memories and reminisced about the past, including an interview segment led by Catherine Boldeau, focusing on the school's impact and journey over the years.

The main worship service celebrated the school's commitment to nurturing not just academic excellence but also spiritual growth, reflecting the school motto: 'God is Master of our School.' It included powerful sermons, spectacular mimes, joyful musical performances, and prayer.

Former BUC President, Pastor Don McFarlane, who served as the chair of the school board for 14 years from 1991, delivered a sermon on the theme of 'legacy.' He highlighted the importance of 'passing down genuine faith' and urged the audience to consider their own legacies, emphasizing the significance of investing in relationships with God, family, and others.

Former school Chaplain and Pastor, Steve McKenzie, shared humorous anecdotes and experiences from his time at the school, emphasizing the significance of maintaining a personal relationship with God.

Alumni Clive DaSilva delivered a powerful message on the value of education, the strength of community, overcoming fear, and leaving a positive legacy for future generations. He also paid tribute to two former schoolmates, Sheldon Taff and Clinton Murray, who had passed away, praising their compassion, talent, and lasting impact.

The 'Legacy' Concert ended the Sabbath program with captivating performances in music and mime presented by both alumni and current students, showcasing their talent and creativity. Additionally, a nostalgic video montage featuring class and staff photos over the years charted the school's history. The Hyland House School Choir gave multiple renditions, and notable alumni such as Justin 'Ghetts' Clarke-Samuel and Tyrell T also graced the stage.

The festivities concluded on Sunday, July 9th, at the Hyland House School premises in Tottenham with a Summer Fete Extravaganza. The day-long event once again brought students, families, and alumni together for a joyous occasion filled with food, games, stalls, and special performances.
